ATLAS Playground Optical Network

This page documents the optical connections of the FELIX cards in the ATLAS playground (currently in H148).

Introduction

The Prime712 and BNL712 FELIX cards come in two main configurations: 48 channels and 24 channels. For the optical connection, two (key-up/key-down) MTP couplers are present on each card: for the 48 channel version, there are 24-TX and 24-RX fibers connected to each MTP coupler; for the 24 channel version, the channel number is 12 for each MTP coupler.

The fiber mapping is described in detail in the FLX-712 Hardware Manual as an example, the mapping of the 48 fibers configuration is shown below.

Patch Panels in the ATLAS Playground

In our lab, we use a number of patch panels and optical conversion cables in order to be able to connect individual or groups of channels. As of now, we have the capability of splitting three MTP-48 connectors into three groups of 48 individual fibers with LC connectors.
